What's on in Cornwall - February half-term 2019
February half term is a wonderful time to bring the family to Cornwall..
… with longer days and plenty to see and do, both outside and in. Plus there are lots of family-friendly cafes and restaurants with roaring log fires to retreat to for a restorative hot chocolate and/or Cornish pasty. So dig out the wellies and woolly hats and get ready for a healthy dose of fresh air and vitamin sea - here’s our list of what’s on in Cornwall this February half-term.
Ice-skating at the Eden Project
Until 24th Feb 2019. Enjoy some family fun on the ice on Cornwall’s only indoor ice rink, or just sit back with a hot chocolate and relax whilst the kids whizz round. And, in the biomes, experience the adventure of a lifetime, visiting five continents in one day. Featured in the Sunday Telegraph’s Top 10 half-term breaks. Take an extra pair of warm socks for the ice-skating!
17th - 24th Feb 2019. Take a ride in a steam-heated carriage on Cornwall’s premier steam railway. There are half-term activities and a dressing-up box and children travel for just £1 during February half-term. Or how about treating someone to a train driver’s experience day or a ‘steam and cream’ trip with a delicious old-style cream tea? Perfect for rainy days!
Discover Cornwall’s china clay mining heritage at Wheal Martyn. With loads of activities planned for half-term, including clay mask-making, a clay building challenge for budding engineers, a water-wheel workshop and badger forest school. This is a great day out for all the family, in all weathers.
10th and 17th February 2019. Come and celebrate the beginnings of Spring with a walk around the beautiful snowdrop-laden gardens and woodland at Pencarrow House, near Bodmin. There’s a childrens play area too and a café where you can warm up with a hot chocolate and a slice of delicious cake.
Saturday 23rd Feb. Enjoy a fun evening of Renegade Pro Wrestling in the atmospheric setting of Bodmin Jail. A great evening out for all the family. Bar food available, or combine it with a fascinating tour of the jail first and take advantage of the on-site restaurant and café. Take some warm clothes if you do, it can be chilly inside the granite-walled depths of the jail.
Open all year, explore the 13 acres of sub-tropical gardens which are host to lions, zebras, monkeys and wildebeest amongst others. Loads of activities daily to keep the little ones amused.
Enjoy a family bike ride on traffic-free trails
Hire a bike and hop on the Camel Trail at nearby Wenfordbridge or Wadebridge and enjoy the flat, almost traffic-free route to Padstow or Bodmin. Grab an award-winning pasty at Choughs, or a Cornish ice-cream if you’re brave, or maybe some of Rick Stein’s famous fish and chips and enjoy with your legs dangling over the harbour wall, watching the world go by. Alternatively, if mountain biking is more your thing, there are some fantastic off-road trails at Lanhydrock and Cardinham Woods, near Bodmin, where bikes can also be hired.
Beaches - surfing and sandcastles
You can’t come to Cornwall without enjoying some of the 300+ beautiful beaches on offer and there are plenty to choose from near Tredarrup. At this time of year they’re almost empty - so bring your wellies and explore the rock pools, enjoy some ball games or take some buckets and spades and stage your own sandcastle competition. It may be February, but that’s no excuse not to head into the surf either – winter wetsuits, boots and gloves can all be hired, so why not have a go at bodyboarding or surfing - we have bodyboards at the cottages that you’re welcome to use. There are plenty of cafes and local pubs too with roaring fires where you can warm up afterwards. For stunning scenery, surf and sand try nearby Trebarwith Strand, Polzeath and Widemouth Bay for starters.
16th - 24th Feb 2019. Heligan are celebrating the natural world this half term and need your help to search for the robin’s lost nest, decorate paper birds for an art installation and make tasty treats for the birds. This is always a great place for children to explore and burn off some energy – take your wellies, as the woods and trails can get muddy. Great café/restaurant on site and a shop selling eco friendly gifts and plants so you can take a bit of Heligan home with you.
16th - 24th Feb. This is a great all-weather family attraction near Newquay, where you can milk the cows, enjoy a tractor ride and a pony ride, feed the animals and then run riot in the huge indoor play centre with climbing nets and slides (and yes, mums and dads can have a go too!)
